The Michigan City Police Department was notified on the morning of Sunday, Oct. 9 about the theft of currency from an ATM located at First Trust Credit Union at 950 East on U.S. 20.

Officers say the ATM had sustained an extensive amount of damage.

An audit was conducted by a representative from the bank who revealed an undisclosed amount of currency was taken from the ATM. Video surveillance was reviewed which aided with identifying a suspect and the vehicle used to commit this crime.

The next day, detectives located the suspect and discovered copious amounts of evidence after executing a search warrant in the 2500 block of Chickadee Drive.

The suspect Malik Bunch, 25, of Hammond, was detained and transported to the Michigan City Police Department. The suspect vehicle was impounded so it could be processed for evidence. Detectives collected additional evidence from inside the suspect vehicle after obtaining a search warrant.

Bunch was charged with theft and criminal mischief.

Bunch is currently incarcerated at the LaPorte County Jail and was issued a $30,000 cash-only bond.
