A St. Joseph County Police Office was arrested on suspicion of operating while intoxicated after a crash.

It was just before 12 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26, when Officer Coty Hoffman, who was off-duty at the time, was traveling in his marked police vehicle and hit a mailbox in the 53000 block of Hickory Road.

Per department rules, Hoffman contacted the on-duty supervisor to report the crash. The supervisor noticed that Hoffman’s speech was slowed and contacted the Indiana State Police to handle the crash investigation.

Indiana State Police officers arrested Hoffman on misdemeanor OWI and Hoffman was booked into the St. Joseph County Jail just after 1:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Hoffman was released from the jail just before 8 a.m.

Sheriff Redman has placed Hoffman on administrative suspension and ordered an internal investigation.

Hoffman will remain on administrative suspension from the department pending the internal investigation and any formal discipline determination by the Sheriff and County Police Merit Board.
