Rash of car break-in reported in parts of LaPorte County

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents to lock their car doors to help prevent vehicle break-ins.
Since Jan. 1, the sheriff’s office says deputies have investigated at least 12 thefts of miscellaneous items from motor vehicles parked in subdivisions and neighborhoods near Critchfield Elementary School and in rural Center Township.
Some of the vehicles were forcibly entered due to the doors being locked. In the other instances, the vehicles were left unlocked.
Area residents, along with any visiting family members and friends, are encouraged to remove all valuable property from the interior of their motor vehicles and lock the doors.
The department says if residents spot any suspicious subjects or vehicles observed in the area, or loud unusual noises are heard, to call 911 immediately.

“Some of the vehicles were forcibly entered due to the doors being locked.”

If they are willing to break in, then locking the doors will only get you a repair bill on top of the theft. That’s silly advice.

The advice about removing valuables from the car every night is MUCH better, and is common sense.

Unless thieves are equipped with X-ray vision eyes, they will still take a chance of breaking into a vehicle. Use of alarms, cameras, warning messages, etc. hopefully will stop a thief from attempting a break-in. The real solution is to capture the thief, help them work threw their issue, and transition them to law abiding citizens.
