Two men charged in connection with South Bend High Street shooting

Two men are facing charges after a shooting on South Bend’s southeast side.

Police were called to the 1300 block of High Street on Wednesday evening, Aug. 12, after a ShotSpotter alert.

They found a man who had been shot. His injuries were not life-threatening.

Investigators identified 19-year-old Jerry Taggart Junior and 20-year-old Alex Deforest as suspects and arrested them a short time later. Police say the shooting happened during an attempted robbery.

Investigators allege Taggart fired at the victim after demanding he empty his pockets.

The victim told police Deforest handed Taggart the gun just before the shooting.

Taggart faces robbery, armed robbery and battery charges. Deforest is charged with aggravated battery and unlawfully carrying a handgun.
