Responding to wrong number could lead to a scam

Responding to a wrong number may seem harmless, but it could lead to a scam.

The Better Business Bureau warns that if you respond to those messages, the texter might ask for personal information by sending links for you to sign up to an adult site.

The BBB has tips to avoid these scams.

They say to ignore texts from strangers, because if you answer, they will contact you even more. They mark your number as active and send more shady texts.

They also say to block unknown numbers and never give any personal information to strangers. That includes credit card or banking information, your full name, home address, and social security number.

If you do encounter a scam, you can report it on the BBB’s website.
