One adult has been arrested and one juvenile has been detained following a large fight that erupted immediately following a girl’s basketball game at Navarre Middle School.

The fight broke out around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, and received an immediate response from South Bend Police Officers who were already on-scene.

Officers were initially told that someone may have had a firearm but no guns were located and there is no evidence any shots were fired. The fights broke out soon afterward.

“That morphed into the point where we had to use every car but two in the city of South Bend,” says South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski, “I counted five county cars and two Indiana State Police that were here. I don’t know how many off-duty or whatever were here, but I’m telling you that’s how many were here.”

Several other kids were detained and eventually released to their parents. This being the second large fight that has happened at a basketball game in South Bend, Chief Ruszkowski has had enough.

Ruszkowski also claimed police ran into some “interference” from school staff. He said he will speak to school administrators next week and promises to never let that happen again.

One individual was evaluated for injuries but was not transported to the hospital. No other injuries were reported.

Ruszkowski spoke to reporters following the incident, providing an impassioned plea to the community to stop the violence. He also expressed frustration that their efforts to restore calm were hampered by school administrators.

Watch Ruszkowski’s statement below:

On Friday afternoon, South Bend Schools and South Bend Police issued a joint statement:

These children are being prepared for adulthood with no consequences for bad behavior. Years ago parents and adults taught children right from wrong, now that doesn’t exist in the Wolk World. This is why we have so many adult criminals always getting an easy pass through the criminal justice system.

Smart parents don’t send their children to South Bend Community Schools.

It’s the lack of accountability by parents and students here..
We see it in everyday

The police are only there to create a bigger problem. Always making the situation worst than what it really is. Go police your own neighborhoods, that’s where the problems are. Meth smoking and stealing are in your neighborhoods.

So we have WHAT happened ..but NO REASON given for the outbreak..Give the whole story…with the facts…Not speculation…Seems that this is all part of the agenda put forth by the “new” administration in office in our govt.and their affiliates..We went thru this when I was in high school..It was stupid then and is beyond stupid now…You can’t push a race issue as we as a society now diverse in our “unions” of family. and a true melting pot…People need to grow up and teach our children the same .Life is too short for this garbage…Be kind and love one another .We were ALL created in His image…think about it..
