Bus safety in LaPorte County

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s office is adding more bus safety.

Deputies will be stationed along bus stops and routes to look for stop-arm violations and dangerous drivers.

It’s part of Indiana’s Stop-Arm Violation Enforcement program.

Officers will also work with local schools and bus drivers to find where the most amount of violations occur.

In Indiana, it is against the law for motorists to pass a stopped bus while its lights are flashing and the stop-arm is extended.

The single exception is for vehicles on the opposite side of the road. But, they are warned to proceed with caution.

About the SAVE program: “Launched in 2019, the Stop-Arm Violation Enforcement (SAVE) program works to provide safe transportation routes for students going to and from school in Indiana. Grants are awarded to law enforcement agencies to conduct high-visibility patrols along school bus stops and routes. SAVE is funded by the NHTSA and administered by the ICJI.”
