An investigation is underway after a man was found dead in a wooded area east of the Kroger grocery store in the 900 block of South Merrifield Avenue.

A mushroom hunter found the man, identified as Earl Eugene Risner, 49, of Mishawaka, around 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 30, and contacted Mishawaka Police. Both police and the Mishawaka Fire Department responded to the scene.

Due to the nature of this incident, the St. Joseph County Coroner’s office was contacted and a Deputy Coroner also arrived.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, May 1, in Kalamazoo.
