When a child is battling a critical illness, it helps to have a positive experience on the horizon. Between hospital stays, medical appointments, and missed school, sick children and their families can experience some very dark days. An exciting wish experience gives a child and their immediate families something to look forward to.

Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana delivers hope and empowerment through personalized wish experiences that help a child – and their caregivers and loved ones – find strength. Whether we help build a backyard playset, grant a give-back wish to organize a blood drive, or fulfill a wish for a dream vacation, our wishes inspire kids and their communities.

Parents say wishes have a powerful impact on children and families. In a recent survey, 90% of parents said receiving their child’s wish relieved trauma, and 80% said it gave their child strength to fight and a coping mechanism during treatment. A wish provides a positive, lasting impact. Nine out of 10 parents said the experience improved their child’s bonds with loved ones.

When nine-year-old Nyla was undergoing chemotherapy treatments for leukemia, she looked forward to visits from therapy dogs. The furry friends brightened her day. So when it came time to make her wish, Nyla asked for a dog. Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana gave her an adorable puppy. Nyla’s new furry friend provides companionship, comfort, and joy.

Similarly, caring for a new animal is helping six-year-old Evelyn build her strength and fortitude. Evelyn has cystic fibrosis and has difficulty breathing. She wanted a horse of her own to ride and care for and Make-A-Wish of Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana delivered. Evelyn named the horse Cash and it provides her with a positive outlet on good and difficult days.

“Since Evelyn’s wish was granted, she’s just Evelyn who rides horses, she’s not Evelyn who has CF when she’s with Cash,” said her mother, Kelly.

Experiences like these help a child struggling with a critical illness to build strength and resilience. That’s the core of Make-A-Wish’s mission.  If you’d like to help us grant more wishes, please donate to Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana. Your contribution can help deliver joy and give a child and their family the power to fight on.
