Around two dozen apartment units were damaged during a fire at The Highlands Apartment complex in Elkhart.
Crews were called to the complex just before 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, to find a large plume of smoke coming from the roof of one of the buildings.
Once access was made, crews encountered active fire within the attic space above. As more Elkhart fire crews arrived, requests for help from county departments was made.
After more than three hours, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and stop the spread of any further damage.
There were no reports of any civilian injuries, but two firefighters sustained minor injuries.
The building contained 30 apartments, with approximately 24 units affected by either fire, smoke or water damage.
All residents within the building were displaced and the American Red Cross was contacted to help provide assistance for the residents.
Once the fire was extinguished, crew members helped families retrieve essential items.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Why do so many apartment complexes in the Michiana area have these major fires ? We didn’t have them 30 or 40 years ago like today. The people living in them today must be totally irresponsible. My parents taught me and my siblings about fire safety growing up.
