One person killed, four hospitalized after SUV, antique firetruck collide on U.S. 20 in Porter County

One person was killed and four others were hospitalized in a crash between an SUV and an antique fire truck.

The collision happened around 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 1, on U.S. 20 in Porter County.

According to authorities, the fire truck was headed westbound when the driver of a Toyota Highlander made a left turn from 520 onto U.S. 20, in front of the fire truck.

The Highlander caught fire. Some good samaritans are credited with helping get some of the victims out of that vehicle.

One of the passengers died at the scene. Four others were taken to the hospital.

The driver of the fire truck was not taken to the hospital.

The area was closed off to traffic for hours during the investigation.

Highlander has a hybrid model that is packed with NiMH batteries. I wonder if that was the case here? Those things are very flammable…
