At least five people were killed and hundreds of thousands found themselves without power when a tornado and severe thunderstorms slammed into Michigan Thursday night.

A number of trees were blown down, and there were reports of damage to buildings and traffic problems in the area of I-96 southeast of Lansing. The tornado crossed the interstate, flipping over cars and at least one mobile home.

Damage and at least one death was also reported in the west Michigan town of Cedar Springs.

Governor Whitmer was declaring a state of emergency on Friday and working to provide resources to the areas impacted by the severe storms.
