A South Bend woman has been found guilty for a crash, three years ago, that critically injured a motorcyclist.
The collision happened in June of 2020 in the area of Michigan and Walter Streets when prosecutors say 22-year-old Kara Beaty turned in front of the man’s motorcycle, causing it to go airborne for about 70 feet.
Beaty’s vehicle crashed into a power pole.
The motorcyclist suffered multiple broken bones. Beaty was also injured. A blood test revealed marijuana in her system.
The jury found Beatty guilty of Causing Serious Bodily Injury When Operating a Vehicle with a Schedule I or II Substance in the Blood, Causing Death or Catastrophic Injury When Operating a Vehicle with a Schedule II Substance in the Blood and Operating a Vehicle with a Controlled Substance or Metabolite.
She faces more than 18 years in prison if sentenced to the maximum in early October.
