Work is wrapping up on the regilding of Notre Dame’s iconic Golden Dome.

The scaffolding is starting to come down. The South Bend Tribune reports that the regilding of the Golden Dome this summer should wrap up in the coming weeks.

The project marked only the 12th time the work has been done since the building went up 140 years ago. The University attempts to space out the regilding work for 20 years at a time, but has only managed as many as 18 years. Environmental factors such as snow, ice, wind erosion, UV light, and even bird droppings take a heavy toll on the coating, which costs as much as $600 per gallon.
