Dueling protests over Isreal, Palestine in South Bend

As the fighting continues between Hamas militants and Israeli forces in the Middle East, so do the demonstrations of support for both Israel and Palestine.

In South Bend on Sunday, both pro-Israel and pro-Palestine groups gathered in the city center for demonstrations, at some points even clashing with each other. None of the back and forth between the two groups erupted into violence though, which was commended by South Bend Mayor James Mueller.

“There may be some disagreements about how we get to a lasting peace, of course, but God bless our country were we can have these kids of demonstrations,” he said. “There are lots of feelings, there’s a lot of hurt on both sides.”

Protestors in support of Israel in South Bend were urging international leaders to do something to “free Palestine from Hamas.” Pro-Palestine supporters were urging Israeli forces to cease their air campaign on targets in Gaza.

President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are discussing efforts to locate and free the more than 220 hostages while stepping up the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

The White House says the two leaders spoke during a call Sunday morning in which Biden stressed the need to “significantly increase” assistance to meet the needs of Palestinian civilians.

Israel’s military said its fighter jets struck more than 450 Hamas targets in Gaza since Saturday.

So far around 1,400 Israeli civilians have been killed while close to 8,000 civilians in Gaza have also been killed.
