South Bend officials have approved a project designed to calm traffic on Angela Boulevard.

The road will undergo $3.2 million worth of changes from SR 933 to Twyckenham, starting after the university’s commencement weekend in May.

The project aims to protect cyclists and pedestrians who navigate through the area along with an average daily traffic of about 15,000 cars a day.

To the west of Notre Dame Avenue, the city will spend $978,000 to restripe Angela with one lane for cars and another for bicycles in each direction.

A multi-use path, the Coal Line Trail, which runs towards the campus from the St. Joseph River, will be extended along Angela to merge with a sidewalk south of Burke Golf Course.
