The City of St. Joseph wants to “bee” a bee city.

Earlier this week, the Assistant City Manager told city commissioners that the sustainability committee has decided that “sustaining bee populations is in line” with its priorities.

Bee City USA provides cities with the resources to support the pollinating insects in their communities. To be an affiliate, the city will have to create an enhanced pollinator habitat, according to WSJM. That includes incorporating bee-positive practices, and hosting a pollinator event each year for the public.

Commissioners voted to seek the committee’s approval to join the national colony of Bee Cities.
