St. Joseph County Sheriff Bill Redman asks for pay raise

With a dwindling staff and a lot of work having to be put into to make up for the staffing shortage, the sheriff in St. Joseph County is asking county leaders for a pay raise.

Sheriff Bill Redman went before the county council Monday to explain why he and some staffers need a pay increase.

He said it’s mainly due to a shortage of correctional officers. He says he’s short about 50 officers in the county’s jail, and that work is starting to pile up.

Those who support Redman’s request say St. Joseph County is one of the largest counties in Indiana but has one of the lowest starting salaries for correctional officers.

Why not just steal some more money out of the DARE program to fund it?
