A dog was shot and killed by a police officer in Indianapolis last week and the dog’s owner is demanding Indianapolis Metro Police hold the officer accountable.
The officer was with another officer on a domestic disturbance call to the home along Adams Street where the dog lived Friday afternoon. It’s a home that the officers had been called to a few times before in recent weeks. Ring Doorbell camera footage shows the officers knocking on the door and the owner opening the door.
The dog, a two-and-a-half-year-old pitbull named “Dbo”, ran out the door and onto the front porch. Appearing startled by the dog, the officer pulled his gun and fired two shots hitting and killing the dog.
“He shot an innocent dog that was literally trying to run out the gate,” said Ashley Bills, whose sister owns the dog. “That’s what he does. He runs out the gate when me or my mom comes up, or the kids come up.”
Their house has a “Beware of Dog” sign out front. Bills believes the officer did it on purpose.
“He’s going to say he was scared, but I don’t think he was scared,” Bills said. “I think he was really trying to pull his weight around and he was frustrated because he was called to that address.”
IMPD records show police have been called to that address at least three times since late April. One call was for a suicidal person, another was for vandalism and this final time was for a domestic disturbance.
The Civilian-Majority Use of Force Board is looking into the situation, but the officer who shot the dog is not on administrative leave because he did not shoot a person.
