Local bookstore tops goal to keep business alive

The story isn’t over for a South Bend bookstore after concerns that they would have to close.

Brain Lair Books in the Near Northwest Neighborhood told WNDU a week ago that they were going to have to close unless they sold 5,682 books by Halloween to raise $25,000. The bookstore sold more than 5,700 in a little over one week, both at their store in the 1000 block of Portage Avenue, and at their online store, to save the business.

Owner Kathy Burnette thanked the community for their support and said she remains committed to serving the community. She also invited people to continue to support the store. Beyond selling books, Brain Lair Books customers also enjoy events like book clubs, puzzle and trivia nights, and more.
