New statistics suggest that upwards of 3.2 million Michiganders may be getting their water from aquifers tainted with PFAS chemicals.
That’s a ratio of 1 in 3 residents, according to a new federal report highlighting the problems from household wells and polluting industrial sites.
Bridge Michigan reports the rate is among the highest in the U.S., which has roughly 95 million residents getting their water from PFAS-tainted sources.
The report attributes the high rate in Michigan to the heavy presence of polluting industries in the state, but outside sources say they are shocked by the high number. Michigan has 328 known or suspected PFAS contamination sites, and more are added to the list every week. Legislation to change that is under consideration.
