Mayor James Mueller and other community leaders gathered to honor the late Ray Snyder on Thursday with an honorary street sign renaming ceremony.

Snyder, a lifelong South Bend area resident and pillar of the community, is now honored at the intersection of Portage Avenue and Elwood Avenue, commemorating his dedication to the betterment of the community.

Below is more about Ray Snyder, provided by the City of South Bend:

Ray Snyder, a lifelong resident of the South Bend area, was a pillar of the community, a dedicated business owner, and a committed mentor. Ray graduated from Central High School and served honorably in the United States Army. After working the night shift at Bendix, he founded Portage Sunoco and Snyder Brothers Garage, where he became renowned for his fair, honest, and courteous service to countless customers. Over the years, he informally mentored many teens, offering apprenticeships to young mechanics at his station since the 1960s.
For over five decades, Ray poured his heart into the Chet Waggoner Little League, serving as a guiding force and chief benefactor, impacting thousands of families.  His unwavering commitment to the league helped build a lasting legacy, providing a ‘field of dreams’ for future generations.
Ray’s dedication extended to his family, with his three sons Jim, Dan, and Russ and grandson Bill continuing his legacy of reliable and skilled auto repair. In recognition of his impact, Ray was inducted into the South Bend Hall of Fame as a humble, “everyman” figure who made a lasting difference in the lives of others.
As a lasting tribute to his life of service, an honorary street renaming will commemorate Ray’s dedication to the betterment of Portage Avenue and the South Bend community.
