Toddler Killed, Infant Injured in Wabash House Fire

A house fire in Wabash claimed the life of a 2-year-old girl and left a 6-month-old infant critically injured on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called around 12:10 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30, to the fire in the 600 block of Columbus Street after a passerby noticed smoke and alerted the family. Firefighters to find the home engulfed in flames.

Two children were pulled from the burning house. The infant was found unresponsive and was rushed to a local hospital before being airlifted to Riley Hospital in Indianapolis. The child remains in stable condition.

The older child, identified as 2-year-old Deliaha Goforth, was pronounced dead at the scene. Family members have been notified.

Preliminary findings by the Indiana State Fire Marshal suggest the fire began on the first floor, where Deliaha was located. Both children were reportedly asleep in separate rooms when the fire started.

An autopsy for Deliaha will be conducted at the Northeast Indiana Forensic Center to determine her cause of death.

The Indiana State Police and the State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the fire alongside the Wabash County Coroner to determine whether any criminal activity was involved.
