No cameras to be allowed in courtroom for Richard Allen’s sentencing

95.3 MNC News
When Richard Allen learns his sentence this month, cameras will not be allowed in the courtroom.
Special Judge Fran Gull denied a request from local media to record Allen’s Dec. 20 sentencing hearing. Allen was convicted of four counts of murder in the February 2017 deaths of Abby Williams and Libby German near the Monon High Bridge.
Gull’s decision was not unexpected. While she allowed cameras for an Oct. 19, 2023, hearing, she has since rejected all requests to record proceedings in the high-profile case.
During the Oct. 19 session, Gull announced the withdrawal of Allen’s defense team. It was the only hearing with cameras permitted.
Gull previously said that “unauthorized” broadcasts of the Oct. 19 proceedings led her to reject future camera requests. She was part of a pilot program to test courtroom broadcasts.
As a result of this week’s ruling, the public will again rely on reporter updates as Gull determines Allen’s sentence.
