A 19-year-old Illinois man sustained serious injuries after being struck on the Indiana Toll Road while outside his vehicle following a crash.
According to Indiana State Police, the incident occurred at approximately 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 10, near the 94-mile marker. The man, from Frankfort, IL, had been driving eastbound in a Ford SUV when the vehicle spun out on slick, snow-covered roads and came to rest in the middle of the highway, blocking the eastbound lanes.
After getting out of the SUV, the man was standing near the driver’s side when a Volvo semi-truck struck the SUV on its passenger side. The impact propelled the SUV into the man, throwing him into a roadside ditch.
Emergency responders transported the SUV driver to Memorial Hospital in South Bend with serious injuries. The semi-truck driver, a 64-year-old from Philadelphia, PA, was unharmed.
The eastbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road were closed for over an hour for the investigation and removal of vehicles, reopening around 8:20 p.m. Police confirmed road conditions were hazardous at the time due to ongoing snowfall.
