Guilty plea from man accused in deadly parking lot shooting

St. Joseph County Jail

The man prosecutors say shot and killed security guard at a parking garage in South Bend has pleaded guilty.

The guard, Robert Pulliam, Jr., was shot and killed while asking Derrick Pratcher, 35, to leave the area. That was back in March of 2023.

Investigators say Pratcher had been loitering around the parking garage and even looking in the windows of some parked cars. As Pulliam turned his back for a moment, police say Pratcher shot and killed him.

Pratcher was charged with Murder and two counts of Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun.

In exchange for pleading guilty, but mentally ill, the unlawful carrying counts are expected to be dropped.
