Elkhart County Humane Society at full capacity after hoarding case

The Humane Society of Elkhart County is overwhelmed with animals after rescuing nearly two dozen dogs from a large-scale hoarding case over the weekend. More dogs are expected to arrive later this week as part of an ongoing investigation, putting further strain on the already full shelter.
In response, the Humane Society is waiving all dog adoption fees through February 15 and calling on the community to help by adopting, fostering, donating, or spreading the word.
“We are doing everything we can to provide care for these dogs, but with so many animals in our shelter, we need the community’s help now more than ever,” said Rob LaRoy, Executive Director of HSEC.
To ease overcrowding, the agency is also seeking foster homes. Temporary placements not only provide relief for the shelter but also give dogs a chance to adjust in a home setting. The organization covers all expenses for foster families, and those interested can apply through the Humane Society website.
The shelter is also facing rising costs, particularly for medical care. Donations help provide food, vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, and other essential veterinary treatments.
For more information on adopting, fostering, or donating, visit www.elkharthumanesociety.org. The shelter operates Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
