The Dowagiac Police Department is actively investigating multiple assaults that took place following a high school men’s basketball game.
According to police, the incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, after the Buchanan vs. Benton Harbor game when a Michigan High School Athletic Association referee was targeted. Authorities say players and a coach from Benton Harbor threw objects that struck the referee. Police are also trying to identify members of the audience who may be connected.
Officers at the scene escorted the official off the court, through the locker room, and to his vehicle for safety. Investigators are still working to identify additional individuals involved in the assault.
The investigation was underway as Dowagiac Union Schools prepared to host the final district championship game between Buchanan and Edwardsburg on Friday night. Dowagiac police confirmed that officers would be present at the event.

it’s a damn shame what ref’s have to go through. Some fans, players and coaches have serious anger control issues. I can speak from experience. Benton Harbor has excelled in this issue. Schools are asking why it is difficult to recruit young people to become officials? This incident is a true example of why many experienced officials leave the profession. We do it because we love the “game” and want to contribute to “fair play”. Trust me… it’s NOT the pay.
