A five-year-old boy’s death has been ruled a homicide, leading to the arrest of his mother and her boyfriend on serious charges, authorities announced.

It was around 7:15 a.m. on Sunday, March 2, when emergency responders were called to a home in the 2200 block of Normandy Drive after a 911 call reported that Augustus Williams, 5, was unresponsive. The child’s mother, Halie Lewis, 23, and her boyfriend, Brice Bainum, 32, were in the home at the time.

Officers with the Michigan City Police Department, along with the Michigan City Fire Department and LaPorte County EMS, arrived at the scene.

Augustus was transported to Franciscan Hospital before being airlifted to the University of Chicago’s Comer Children’s Hospital for advanced medical treatment. Despite efforts by first responders and medical professionals, he was pronounced dead around 7 p.m. that same evening.

On Wednesday, the Cook County, Illinois, Medical Examiner ruled Augustus’ death a homicide.

On Thursday, probable cause was found to charge Bainum with murder and interference with the reporting of a crime. His bond was set at $1 million cash-only, and he remains in the LaPorte County Jail awaiting his initial hearing.

On Friday, probable cause to charge Lewis with neglect of a dependent causing death. She was issued a $100,000 cash-only bond and is also being held in the LaPorte County Jail.
