The National Weather Service says six tornadoes hit Indiana on Wednesday night.
Three EF-0 tornadoes motored through Lake County, specifically in Highland, Griffith, and Gary. An EF-0 also reached Miami County, an EF-1 tornado moved through west and southwest parts of Gary. The largest tornado continues to be in Bartholomew County from Wednesday night, which was an EF-2.
“Thankfully a lot of the tornadoes from Wednesday night were rather weak,” said Greg Melo, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.
As far as the damage goes from an EF-1 tornado in Gary, it ripped off a portion of the gymnasium roof from Frankie Woods McCullough Academy, blew out the garage and ripped off the roofs of several homes on West 21st Avenue, as well as bent several power poles and light fixtures. One woman was also injured from part of the roof landing on her, but she is expected to recover.
Tree damage was reported along with other buildings sustaining damage during the EF-0 tornadoes.
“You typically get 65-85 mph winds with an EF-0 tornado,” said Chris Roller, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana.
So far, there have been 14 tornadoes that have touched down in Indiana in 2025.
