Paid parking headed to downtown St. Joseph

Paid parking is officially headed to downtown St. Joseph this summer.

City commissioners approved the final ordinance and rules on Monday.

Paid parking will be enforced on the west side of Main Street from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. between May 15 and September 15.

Residents have expressed mixed reactions over the last few years of discussion, with some believing it may hurt downtown businesses.

WSJM explains that several changes have been made to the original proposal, including a waiver program for downtown residents and passes for downtown employees who have physical or financial limitations.

30 paystations have been purchased, and an app will be available to pay for parking.
