A new study shows that access to gyms is an often-overlooked factor in America’s fight against obesity, and that includes right here in Michiana.

The obesity epidemic gets worse, and the health gaps get wider. With the exception of the early months of the pandemic, fitness-related businesses and the public’s interest in them have seen steady growth since 2012.

New analysis from the consumer website Cinch looks at the areas with the most access to fitness centers. Their numbers show the South Bend-Mishawaka metro area has 35 gyms and fitness centers, roughly 10.8 for every 100,000 residents, which lags behind the national average of 13.2.
