Indiana lawmakers passed a bill that invites Illinois counties to join the Hoosier state.
The House approved the Senate’s version of House Enrolled Act 1008 on April 17, sending it to Gov. Mike Braun.
Bill author Speaker Todd Huston says the goal is to offer lower taxes and more opportunity to Illinois residents seeking to leave Chicago’s political influence.
So far, 33 Illinois counties have approved non-binding referenda to secede from their state, though none mentioned Indiana.
Organizers say support is strong, with some counties showing over 70% approval.
