A Romeoville, Illinois man was arrested following a multi-vehicle crash that injured several members of the New Prairie High School baseball team.
LaPorte County deputies say 41-year-old Shawn Wesly Russell Akison was driving a box truck westbound on U.S. 20 Thursday afternoon when he crashed into a commercial vehicle and two New Prairie United School Corporation minibuses at Fail Road.
The crash happened shortly after St. Joseph County deputies attempted to stop the truck for reckless driving on State Road 2. The pursuit was called off at County Road 900 East before the crash occurred.
Seven student-athletes and two coaches were injured. Several were treated at the scene, others taken to local hospitals, and one student was airlifted to a regional facility.
Akison was arrested at the scene and taken to the LaPorte County Jail after being medically cleared. He is charged with Level 5 felony criminal recklessness and is being held on a $15,005 cash bond.
Officials are asking anyone with dashcam footage or who witnessed the truck on SR 2 or U.S. 20 to contact the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office.
