A K9 with the Greenfield Police Department has died after an encounter with an off-duty New Palestine police officer.
In a release put out by Greenfield Deputy Chief Charles McMichael on Monday, he said that K9 Ace got loose from his residence in New Palestine and then encountered a neighbor, the off-duty officer. Ace’s handler was not home at the time of the incident which was just before 8 p.m.
GPD said K9 Ace bit the officer, causing serious injuries. The officer was able to subdue the K9, which sadly resulted in the dog’s death.
The injured officer was transported to a hospital in Indianapolis to be treated for his injuries.
“Our thoughts, prayers, and full support are with him and his family during this extremely difficult time,” Greenfield Police Chief Brian Hartman said. “We will be here to support him through his recovery.”
“We also extend our heartfelt condolences to Officer Freeman and the entire Greenfield Police Department on the loss of K9 Ace, a dedicated service animal and valued member of our Department,” Chief Hartman added.
GPD said they are thoroughly reviewing their procedures and safeguards to make sure an incident like this doesn’t happen again.
The incident is still under investigation.
