City officials, state lawmakers, and common council members gathered on Thursday, May 15, for a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of major improvements at the Byers Softball Complex on the city’s southwest side.
The upgrades are funded in part by a $3 million state grant, secured with the help of Senator David Niezgodski and other state legislators.
Planned improvements include:
Renovated press box, restrooms, and concessions — all ADA compliant
Rebuilt fields across all four main diamonds
A new entry plaza and gateway
Two new batting cages
A splashpad for community use
Historical signage recognizing the complex’s legacy
Removal of overgrown outfield shrubbery
The city partnered with engineering firm DLZ for design and master planning. R. Yoder Construction has been awarded the construction bid and will lead the renovations.
During construction, all spring and summer 2025 games will be relocated to Boehm Park, Potawatomi Park, and Boland Park.
The project is expected to be completed by September.
