A 6-year-old boy reported missing Friday evening, June 20, was later found unresponsive in a neighbor’s pool, according to the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office.
Dispatch received a call around 8:40 p.m. reporting the child had left his home in the 52000 block of Conestoga Court. The child, identified as Joshua Nizigiyimana, was believed to be autistic and non-verbal. Officers immediately began a search alongside the boy’s family and neighbors.
At approximately 9:02 p.m., Joshua was found unresponsive in a pool at a nearby home on Lariat Lane. Life-saving measures were initiated, and he was transported to a hospital, but he later died.
The sheriff’s office says preliminary findings suggest the drowning was accidental. The investigation is ongoing.
“Our hearts are with the Nizigiyimana family as they endure an unimaginable loss,” said Sheriff Bill Redman. “We also extend our support to neighbors, community members, and all first responders involved in this heartbreaking case.”
Officials say a debriefing is being arranged for officers who responded to the scene, acknowledging the emotional toll such incidents can have—especially for officers who are parents themselves. The sheriff’s office is also exploring ways to support others affected by the tragedy.
Joshua attended Horizon Elementary, where people described him as joyful, kind, and full of light. There is a donation page set up to help with funeral costs, meals, and other needs.
