Just after 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Sep. 24, the South Bend Fire Department was dispatched to a reported water rescue in the 300 block of E. Colfax Avenue.
A tenant nearby reported hearing yelling and seeing a man in the water just behind the Cascade.
Upon SBFD’s arrival, the tenant was able to assist firefighters in identifying the last known location of the victim.
The South Bend Fire Department’s swiftwater personnel then entered the water and located the victim in about 8-10 feet of water.
The victim, a man believed to be in his 40s or 50s, was pronounced deceased on scene. Fishing gear was found nearby.
