New AAA study shows aggressive driving fuels more road rage

A new survey from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety finds that aggressive driving is a widespread problem, with most motorists admitting to hostile behavior on the road.
The study reveals that exposure to aggressive driving often leads drivers to respond in kind, creating a cycle of tension and conflict behind the wheel.
In the survey of licensed drivers, 96% admitted to at least one aggressive driving behavior in the past year, including speeding, tailgating, running red lights, honking excessively, or cutting off other vehicles.
“Driving often turns into a high-stress experience, not just because others drive recklessly, but because we react in the moment,” said Molly Hart, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Even the calmest drivers can get drawn into road rage after a single hostile encounter, but with simple strategies, we can all help make roads safer.”
Among the key findings:
Aggressive Driving: Most drivers report aggressive behaviors, often motivated by a desire to reach their destination faster or avoid perceived danger.
Violent Actions: About 11% admitted to intentionally bumping another car or confronting another driver.
Top Offenders: Drivers under 60 and those with household incomes over $100,000 were most likely to drive aggressively. While men and women are equally likely to drive aggressively, men are more prone to escalating to violent behaviors.
Aggression Breeds Aggression: Drivers exposed to hostile behavior are more likely to act aggressively themselves.
Vehicle Matters: Sports cars, big trucks, and motorcycles are often associated with more aggressive driving, with some drivers reporting feelings of dominance behind the wheel.
The AAA Foundation says the findings highlight the need for increased awareness and strategies to reduce road rage, emphasizing that even minor incidents can escalate quickly if motorists respond aggressively.
