A three-vehicle crash led to the arrest of a driver suspected of operating while intoxicated, according to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office.

The collision happened around 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, along Ash Road near Old U.S. Highway 20.

Investigators say a northbound vehicle driven by 61-year-old David Pauwels of Osceola was traveling at an unsafe speed and failed to stop for traffic.

His vehicle struck the back of a Chrysler 200, driven by an Elkhart woman, which was waiting to turn left at the intersection.

After the initial impact, Pauwels’ car spun and its rear end hit the side of a trailer attached to a Ram 3500 driven by a South Bend man who was stopped nearby.

Pauwels suffered minor bleeding to his leg and arm and was treated at Elkhart General Hospital.

Deputies say alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash. A search warrant was obtained for Pauwels, who was later booked into the Elkhart County Jail on a charge of Operating While Intoxicated.
