Indiana State Police from the Lowell Post and Regional Dispatch Center were flooded with calls Sunday as back-to-back lake-effect snowstorms hit northwest Indiana.
Troopers responded to hundreds of incidents along I-65 and I-80/94, including crashes, slide-offs, flat tires, stalled vehicles, and trucks stuck on icy roads. Semis struggled the most, with dozens becoming disabled on inclines near Ridge Road and at the I-65/I-80 ramps, blocking traffic for several hours.
Call summary:
Property damage crashes: 88
Injury crashes: 5
Slide-offs: 81
Motorist assists: 121
One trooper was injured when a speeding driver lost control and crashed into his patrol SUV on I-65 north of I-80. Both were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, and the driver was cited for unsafe lane movement and speed.
