Two 18-year-old men were arrested after an armed carjacking in South Bend led to a police pursuit and brief search.

South Bend Police were called just after 2:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, to Jefferson Boulevard and Niles Avenue, where a man reported that his vehicle had been stolen at gunpoint. The victim told officers he had offered two men a ride to help them out in the cold but said one of them pulled a handgun when he stopped the car, ordering him out and threatening to shoot.

A short time later, officers spotted the stolen vehicle near Lincoln Way West and Wilber Street. When they attempted a traffic stop, the driver fled, leading to a pursuit that ended in the 1500 block of South Taylor Street. Police apprehended both suspects—identified as Rodney Turner Jr. and Damarion Hipskind—near the scene.

Both were taken to the St. Joseph County Jail. The Prosecutor’s Office has charged Turner with multiple felonies, including robbery, auto theft, intimidation, and resisting law enforcement, along with several misdemeanor counts. Hipskind faces a misdemeanor charge of resisting law enforcement.
