Restaurants and bars in Benton Harbor will now be allowed to serve alcohol before noon on Sundays.

That comes after action by city commissioners Monday night. WSJM says the commission approved a resolution lifting a local restriction that applied only to bars and restaurants, NOT convenience or liquor stores.

Commissioner Sharon Henderson said restaurant owners approached the city, frustrated they couldn’t serve alcohol on Sunday mornings while competitors in Benton Township and St. Joseph could.

Mayor Marcus Muhammad said the change helps create a level playing field and attract businesses to the city.

He added a stronger commercial tax base is needed to reduce residential taxes. The restriction is now removed for Class C license holders.
