The City of Elkhart has commemorated the one-year anniversary of the deadly Martin’s Supermarket shooting – an event that killed two people and wounded two officers.

On Tuesday, Jan. 27, city leaders honored the victims, Annasue Rocha and Benjamin Jeffery, and recognized the officers seriously injured when they confronted and stopped the shooter.

Officials also credited dispatchers, medics, and a social worker inside the store for helping police respond almost immediately.

One officer has since returned on modified duty; the other remains on medical leave.

The city also praised Martin’s staff and shoppers who tried to get others to safety during the chaos.

Leaders said the community’s response – from residents checking in on officers to offering material support – showed resilience and unity.
