The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District is moving forward with safety enhancements at the Hegewisch Station pedestrian crossings following a recent diagnostic study.
The study, conducted with the Illinois Commerce Commission and the Federal Railroad Administration, recommended adding active warning devices as an added safeguard.
While the crossings already meet federal safety standards, NICTD says the upgrades are being pursued out of an abundance of caution. Plans include installing gates, flashing lights and warning bells, along with reconfiguring the pedestrian crossings.
As part of NICTD’s five-year capital program, the agency will seek engineering proposals and contractor bids. The project is expected to cost approximately 2.75 million dollars.
