One Beech Grove officer was killed and another injured Monday evening after authorities say a suspect opened fire during a disturbance call, prompting a Blue Alert and a large-scale manhunt.
Indiana State Police said the suspect has been identified as 47-year-old Kenneth Terrell Johnson. During a news conference Monday night, police confirmed Johnson was taken into custody around 10:30 p.m.
Officers were first dispatched around 5:37 p.m. to Diplomat Court in Beech Grove for a reported disturbance. Within minutes, the situation escalated and shots were fired, according to police.
Two Beech Grove Police Department officers were shot and transported to Eskenazi Hospital for treatment.
In an updated news conference, authorities announced that one of the wounded officers had died. The condition of the second officer has not been released.
Police said Johnson was last seen northwest of Beech Grove High School wearing a blue hoodie. A Blue Alert was issued while he was at large. A Blue Alert is activated when a law enforcement officer has been seriously injured or killed and the suspect remains at large.
The search was centered near Emerson and Hornet avenues, adjacent to the high school. Residents in the area were urged to stay inside, lock their doors and call 911 if they observed anything suspicious.
By about 6:10 p.m., Emerson Avenue was shut down from Churchman Avenue to Interstate 465 as officers searched for the suspect.
Indiana State Police continue to investigate the shooting.
