Authorities are warning residents about a scam that has already cost victims thousands of dollars over the past two months.
Officials say at least 10 people in St. Joseph County have been contacted by scammers posing as law enforcement or jail officials. Investigators believe the suspects are locating inmate information online and then calling family members claiming their loved one can be released if bail is paid immediately.
Victims are told the only way to secure the release is to send payment through bitcoin or gift cards.
Authorities emphasize the requests are fraudulent.
The sheriff’s office says it will never call someone demanding money, accept payment over the phone, or ask for payment through cryptocurrency or gift cards – all considered major warning signs of a scam.
Officials say bail payments must be made in person at the jail. Law enforcement will not call ahead to warn someone about an arrest warrant, and detectives will never request money during an investigation.
Residents who believe they may have a warrant are advised to contact their attorney or the court directly. Civil paperwork will only be delivered in person or through the mail.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call is urged to hang up and report the incident to local law enforcement.
