The Berrien County Health Department is warning residents about the dangers of 7-hydroxymitragynine, or 7-OH.
It’s a potent opioid found in some kratom products sold at gas stations and smoke shops.
Health officials say 7-OH can cause anxiety, seizures, addiction and severe withdrawal symptoms.
Rare cases of liver injury and death have also been reported. Dr. Jonathan Beyer says emergency departments are seeing more cases tied to the substance.
Though marketed as natural supplements, these products are not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and are not federally regulated. Residents are urged to seek medical care if they experience symptoms.
