A Michigan City man has been sentenced to more than five years in federal prison after admitting to illegally possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
Dontia Grant, 29, of Michigan City, was sentenced on March 3, 2026, by U.S. District Court Judge Cristal C. Brisco to 66 months in prison, followed by two years of supervised release, according to U.S. Attorney Adam L. Mildred.
Court documents say Grant was initially pulled over by police in Michigan City for speeding. When an officer requested his driver’s license and registration, Grant drove away from the traffic stop, leading police on a pursuit lasting about a mile and a half.
Authorities say Grant then abandoned his vehicle and ran from officers, but was quickly caught.
When officers apprehended him, they discovered Grant was carrying a loaded pistol equipped with a 20-round extended magazine.
Prosecutors say Grant was prohibited from possessing a firearm because of prior felony convictions, including unlawful transfer of a firearm and resisting law enforcement.
The case was prosecuted in U.S. District Court in South Bend.
