Shooting at I-94 rest area leaves one injured, suspect arrested

Authorities are investigating a shooting that occurred Monday evening at a rest area along westbound Interstate 94 in Watervliet Township.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to the scene at approximately 7:12 p.m. on March 16. A 34-year-old man was found with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound and was transported to Corewell Health Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph.

Officials say the victim is in stable condition and his injuries are not considered life-threatening.

A 26-year-old man from Kalamazoo was taken into custody and booked into the Berrien County Jail on charges related to the shooting. Authorities are withholding the suspect’s name pending arraignment.

The incident remains under investigation.
